Hong Kong hospital fears for health of 9 newborns after mother in ward diagnosed with TB

Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority is tracing nine newborn babies after it was discovered that a woman in a ward at the time of their birth has since been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The woman was staying in the obstetrics ward of Tuen Mun Hospital from March 24 to 31, during which time she delivered her baby by Caesarean section.

After experiencing respiratory problems, however, she went to a private hospital, which diagnosed her with the infectious disease last Thursday.

Tuen Mun Hospital announced yesterday that although the risk of infection within the hospital is low as the woman was asymptomatic during her stay, they are following guidelines and will be contacting the parents of nine newborn babies from the ward.

The hospital authority seeks to arrange “necessary examination for the concerned nine newborn babies as a precautious measure”.

If your baby was in Tuen Mun Hospital’s obstetrics ward during that period and this is the first you’ve heard about the TB scare, call the inquiry line on (+852) 2468-6197.
