Hong Kong government raises travel alert for Nepal to red as death toll passes 4,000

The government has raised its outbound travel alert for Nepal to red because of the situation on the ground after Saturday’s devastating earthquake.

The official death toll for the country’s worst earthquake in 80 years has now risen above 4,000, reports the NY Times.

“[Hong Kong] residents intending to visit Nepal should adjust their travel plans and avoid non-essential travel, including leisure travel,” a government spokesman said.

Those currently in Nepal were urged to pay attention to the local authorities’ announcements, particularly about potential aftershocks.

It is believed there are 20 Hongkongers who remain missing, though there are conflicting reports.
