Hong Kong Free Press raises HKD600,000, four times more than original goal

Hong Kong Free Press, the city’s newest independent, non-profit news organisation, has raised exactly HKD587,917 on crowdfunding platform FringeBacker.

Far surpassing the founders’ original target of HKD150,000, the media outlet broke FringeBacker’s record for being the project that raised the most money and that reached its target the fastest.

“We are thrilled by the level of support from our backers and by the vote of confidence afforded to us,” said founder and editor-in-chief Tom Grundy in a press release.

“Expectations are high, but our team are already working hard to perfect our workflow, news-gathering tools and website in the run-up to our launch at the end of this month.”

The organisation claimed earlier this month that their website – which is still just a landing page – was the victim of a cyberattack from an unidentified source.

Hong Kong Free Press will be having a soft launch party at Sheung Wan’s XXX Club on Friday, July 3. Tickets will be available on Ticketflap for HKD150.
