The Hong Kong football team has qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time in 54 years after the Philippines lost to Palestine in their final qualifying match.
Palestine’s 4-0 thrashing of the Philippines on Tuesday afternoon means Jorn Andersen’s Hong Kong side, which has six points from the first two matches, is guaranteed a spot in the finals by being at least one of the five best group runners-up, even before playing India in their final qualifier tonight.
All six group winners and the five best second-placed teams will qualify for next year’s Asian Cup finals.
Hong Kong is now sitting at the top of the table in Group D level on points with India, but with a better goal difference of four.
Andersen’s side has good momentum after winning its first two matches against Afghanistan and Cambodia.
But India will be tough competition, especially with the match played at home at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
You can watch it on RTHK32 on television or online.
The Asian Football Confederation earlier said they would decide on a host for the finals in due course after China pulled out of hosting the event due to the COVID-19 situation in the country.
