Two young boys and their father have been discovered dead in their Hong Kong flat several days, possibly weeks, after an apparent murder-suicide.
The bodies of 52-year-old father Chan Chun-hing and his sons Chan Sze-ming, 10, and Chan Sze-ho, 8, were found in an apartment filled with charcoal smoke in Kam Ying Court, Ma On Shan, on Saturday.
According to medical examiners, Sze-ming, who had autism, probably died about two weeks ago, with his younger brother and father living with his corpse for five or six days.
According to the SCMP, suspicions were only raised when the boys failed to show up for the first day of school on Sept. 1 and their father could not be reached.
Their aunt unsuccessfully tried to gain access to the flat a few days later, and then returned with the boys’ mother and a locksmith on Saturday, when the gruesome discovery was made.
The last entries of the father’s journal reportedly give disturbing details of how Sze-ho ingested rat poison a month ago but survived.
According to Apple Daily, who spoke to the father’s brother, Chan suffered a series of personal blows in recent years.
His factory in mainland China, which employed 200 workers at its peak, closed after Chan put a dishonest relative at the helm following the birth of his autistic son. He reportedly lost tens of millions of dollars in the process.
Chan also suffered a stroke and was subsequently divorced from his wife who he met on the mainland.
