Hong Kong country park worker loses fingers in wild boar trap explosion

A Hong Kong country park volunteer lost several fingers after a trap supposedly intended to poach wild boar exploded.

Liu Kwan-kiu, 27, underwent an 18-hour medical procedure to reattach the blown-off digits, according to a report by Apple Daily. Another volunteer was also injured in the incident at Lion Rock Country Park in Sha Tin.

Two men, surnamed Chan, 55, and Ho, 53, have been arrested on suspicion of planting the explosive material in an attempt to catch wild boar with poison bait.

Rewind: Who knew Hong Kong had wild boar?! Poachers, apparently.

An example of what they were trying to kill

According to experts, the improvised device was probably a “pressure bomb”, which uses a small amount of bait filled with inflammable gas and wrapped in duck skin… of all wrapping materials.

The traps, which are reportedly often used on the mainland, can explode when opened.

The two suspects were spotted by witnesses in a vehicle that was later found abandoned 30 kilometres away. According to EJ Insight, police found cages and animal traps at Chan’s home in Yuen Long.
