Hong Kong columnist apologises for sharing unproven domestic helper AIDS story

The Sky Post columnist who this week wrote about an unsubstantiated rumour of a Filipina domestic helper giving HIV to two teenage boys has apologised.

TVB presenter Lai Chi-san, A.K.A Maria Luisa Leitao, said she never intended to insult Hong Kong’s domestic helpers, and admitted she has no evidence for her claims, reports Apple Daily.

On Wednesday, she wrote that a friend (who heard the story from another friend) told her of a Hong Kong family in which two boys, aged 13 and 14, had tested positive for the HIV virus after having sex with their domestic helper.

The situation was apparently uncovered when the whole family underwent testing after learning of the helper’s status.

Lai’s column went viral, and she was subsequently slammed by commentators for muckraking… and generally talking shit.

Apple Daily spoke to Hong Kong’s Department of Health, which confirmed that there have been five cases of patients aged 13 and below contracting the virus in the past five years, but four of these were infected through mother-to-child transmission.

The department said there has been no case involving a 14-year-old boy in that timeframe, however.
