Hong Kong businessman gets life for killing mistress despite ‘no motive, no body and no weapon’

The director of a securities firm has been sentenced to life in prison after a Hong Kong jury found him guilty of killing his hostess mistress.

The jury at Hong Kong’s High Court took less than three hours to deliver their verdict to 42-year-old Ivan Chan.

He was found guilty of killing Chun Ka-yee, 33 – with whom he had been having an extramarital affair with since 2008 – on Oct. 6, 2011, at the flat he bought her in Amoy Gardens, Kwun Tong.

Chan said he broke up with Chun after his wife found out about the relationship.

Chun was last seen on CCTV entering the building on Oct 5, 2011. A day later on Oct. 6, Chan entered and left the building alone. He returned the next morning and left again with a bulky nylon bag.

A few days later Chan had the flat redecorated. Chun was never seen again and her body was never found.

The SCMP reports that “the prosecution relied heavily on circumstantial evidence to prove Chan’s guilt”, and that Deputy Judge Michael Stuart-Moore noted that there was “no motive, no body and no weapon”.

Chan denied murder and said the nylon bag contained his clothes, documents and some red wine.
