A Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) traveling down Hong Kong’s Fanling Highway this afternoon struck a nearby tree, completely shearing off the left side of its upper deck and leaving at six dead and dozens more wounded.

The collision occurred near Tsung Pak Long at around 4pm this afternoon, as the 978 KMB bus was headed towards Sheung Shui, throwing at least three people clear of the vehicle.

Photos of the bus circulating online show its upper deck almost completely demolished, with seats, and even injured passengers’ limbs, dangling over the side.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to help passengers out of the vehicle but two were trapped inside as of early this evening, HK01 reports.

According to the Fire Services Department, around 30 people were injured.

The Transport Department, meanwhile, announced the closure of the part of the highway near Tsung Pak Long.

Updates to follow.
