Hong Kong and Macau, still recovering from the fury of Typhoon Hato, could see more flooding this weekend as another tropical storm is expected to make landfall in Macau on Sunday evening.

The Hong Kong Observatory says that Tropical Storm Pakhar, which is currently building up in the south of the Philippines, will begin intensifying gradually after crossing Luzon. Pakhar could reach 400km south of Hong Kong by Saturday evening and is set to upgrade into a severe tropical storm the next morning, with maximum sustained winds of 105km/hr.

The Observatory said the power of Pakhar will not be in the same league as Hato, which brought Hong Kong its first typhoon signal No.10 in five years, and they currently expect to issue a tropical storm signal no higher than No. 3. However, it’s too early to tell whether Pakhar, just like Hato, will intensify once it reaches Hong Kong’s shores, it added.

At the very least, HKO said Hong Kong will experience cloudy weather with showers and squally thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday, when Pakhar is expected to be closest to the city.
