Hong Kong-based Australian missionary freed from North Korea

After allegedly distributing religious materials in North Korea, 75-year-old Australian but Hong Kong-based missionary was detained by authorities earlier this month, and is now reported to have been freed and in Beijing.

Short was arrested for handing out Korean-language Christian booklets in an attempt to proselytise – acts that are illegal in North Korea, as they fear can instigate unrest in the country.

Short reportedly confessed to and apologised for breaking North Korean law.

North Korea claims to be generous and took into the account of Short’s age to release and deport him.  Short is now reunited with his wife and Australian officials in Beijing.
