Hong Kong attracted 54 million tourists last year

Last year, Hong Kong received a whopping 54 million tourists, or four times the number of visitors to Japan. Out of these millions of tourists, 75 percent of them came from the mainland.

Allowing mainlanders to visit without joining tours has given the economy a boost, it has also affected the lives of Hong Kongers, and not always in a good way.

The increase in visitors has stretched the MTR to its limit with the introduction of more trains on weekends. Rental prices in tourist hotspots have increased by 70 percent, which affects small businesses and residents, reports Apple Daily.

Is it time for the government to do something about the rise in tourism?
