HKUST to complete better than Google 3D map of Hong Kong this year

Believe it or not, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is claiming to be developing a comprehensive 3D map of Hong Kong, that’s better than what’s currently offered on Google Maps.

According to the university, Google’s mapping technology is based on images taken from planes and cars on the ground, missing images are manually filled in by Google staff, so the map has a lot of incomplete or inaccurate data. The HKUST however, has developed an algorithm that can map out missing data, so that such information isn’t done so manually, reports the SCMP.

As the map produces high pixel accuracy of 10sq cm, there are some concerns about the privacy issues associated when the map is released.

The HKUST mapping project will cost HK$4-6 million.
