HK High School Musical: local students become viral sensation with ridiculously catchy maths song

Maths is a pain in the arse for many, but students from Methodist College in Kowloon have attempted to change that with an annoyingly catchy tune to rival Rebecca Black’s Friday and some killer dance moves, all intended to teach the four conditions that determine two congruent triangles (congru—what?).

Since it was uploaded on April 18, the video has become a viral sensation, receiving more than 1.7 million views with over 55,000 reactions (long gone are the days of only likes) at the time of writing on a Facebook page affiliated with the school.

The video shows three students singing “side angle side, side side side, angle side angle, angle angle side” to the tune of Fly, Robin, Fly by the German disco band, Silver Convention.

They make their way around school singing as they run through classrooms and hallways and gradually being joined by fellow students in a Pied Piper-esque situation.

Many have thanked the video for helping them remember otherwise boring mathematics rules while some others have likened the song to a “brainwashing” exercise.

According to Apple Daily, the school’s principal was shocked to see the song receive such a huge response and said the students took part in the video voluntarily (not what some of their faces might suggest).

It’s fair to say the entire team behind this video deserve a pat on the back because this new take on High School Musical might just have made learning maths bearable.
