Police are urging Hongkongers holding the final HKD9 million of the HKD15.23 million that spilled from a money truck onto the road in Wan Chai on Christmas Eve to return it or face possible prosecution.
Barrister and lawmaker Alan Leong Kah-kit told the SCMP that those who surrender the money they took are less likely to face charges, as the police will have more trouble building a case against them.
CHeck out this video of the scramble for cash:
The only three people so far arrested for taking money from the scene in Gloucester Road have, however, all been released without charge.
As of Saturday afternoon, 41 people had returned cash to the police, amounting to HKD6.4 million recovered since the almost unfathomable debacle.
Dozens were seen stopping their vehicles and running into the road when bricks of HKD500 and HKD1,000 notes were spewed from the side door of a G4S security van on Dec. 24. All four members of staff were sat in the front seats at the time and did not even notice the blunder until they were in Kowloon.
Although three plastic boxes containing HKD17.5 million each tumbled into the middle of the road, it could have been a hell of a lot worse/better (depending on your moral compass), as the van was holding HKD270 million of the Bank of China cash in total.
