A group of mainland Chinese men believed to be connected to at least eight recent burglaries of luxury homes across Hong Kong were arrested from their apparent hideout in Yuen Long earlier today.
Armed police officers from the Special Duties Unit raided a sheet metal hut in Tai Kong Po Tsuen, Pat Heung, at around 4am, Oriental Daily reports, and arrested the three men they found inside. Two of the men were reportedly from Guangxi Province, whilst the third was said to be from Guangdong.
All three men are in their 30s and allegedly entered Hong Kong illegally. Their neighbour and landlord, surnamed Lee, said he had no idea about their illicit activites, and had rented the house to the men around three months ago. He described the three as being “not very close with each other”, adding that he thought they were illegal labourers.
According to HK01, police also found some equipment used for inspecting diamonds in the house, and said they believed that the men were targeting rich families.
Hong Kong has been hit by a string of thefts over the holiday season, with 46 burglaries reported between Dec. 25 and 26, SCMP reports. Victims recorded millions in losses, and include prominent lawyer Teresa Cheng.
