HK$40 for a bowl of fish balls?!

It’s not just McDonald’s that’s more expensive! Fish balls, the cheap and cheerful street snack, are not so affordable anymore either. A Mongkok street snack shop, which sells its fish balls only in a Styrofoam bowl, costs HK$40, or HK$10 more expensive than before the Chinese new year. Despite the price, the snack shop still has an endless stream of customers, many of whom praised the fish balls.

This Mongkok snack shop is no exception — four other mega fast food chains — Maxim’s, Café de Coral, and others, are all increasing their prices. A plate of roasted meat and rice at Tai Hing is now HK$50 instead of HK$40. At the iconic Hong Kong eatery Lan Fong Yuen, buns are 17 percent more expensive. Apparently, Chinese New Year is a popular time for price increases. Time to ask your boss for a raise?
