A restaurant in Sham Shui Po known for serving free meals to the homeless and elderly was burgled during the early hours of Wednesday.
According to HK01, a worker arrived to open Pei Ho Counterparts at around 3am, stepping in and out of the shop after that.
At 4:20am, a masked man wearing a black jacket and light-colored pants entered the restaurant. CCTV footage showed him using a knife to pry open the cash register and taking out HK$2,000 (US$258) before fleeing via a back entrance.
Police arrived at the scene upon receiving the worker’s report around an hour later. As of Wednesday evening, nobody has been arrested.
Located in Hong Kong’s poorest district, Pei Ho Counterparts distributes free boxed meals to the homeless, elderly and asylum seekers in the area.
The restaurant’s 68-year-old owner, known as “Ming Gor,” has been recognized as a “true local hero” by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
In 2017, Lingnan University presented the local charity icon with an honorary fellowship for his work serving the low-income community.
