For HK$17,000 a month, you can sleep in the same room as your toilet

Another day in Hong Kong, another story of an apartment that shows how absolutely ridiculous the city’s housing market has become.

This time, it’s a 700-square-foot flat in Kennedy Town going for HK$17,000 (US$2,170) a month, and we know what you’re thinking — that’s kind of an amazing bargain in this city. And it is, unless, of course, you take into account the toilet in the corner of the bedroom.

The one just sitting there, watching you as you sleep and/or allowing you to take a dump in front of your significant other.

Calls and emails to Back Home, the real estate agency behind the listing, went unanswered today, so it’s unclear whether there’s a sliding partition that could wall off the sounds — and smells — of doing your business.

But because this is Hong Kong, people are totally marveling at the value.

Someone posted the listing to the Facebook group Hong Kong Expats in jest on Monday morning, and commenters have already suggested that, for the price, maybe sleeping in the same room as your toilet is no biggie, noting that the space has a second, private toilet. Well then.

“But you know, for the price/space it’s totally worth it,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “700sqft for 17k is cheap as f—!!!”

Coconuts HK has zero doubt that this flat will get snapped up quickly, which is a sad sign of just how insane our real estate market really is.

After all, a flat so small that the bathroom door can’t close can sell for HK$5.78 million (just under US$737,000). And sleeping a couple feet away from the toilet seems downright luxurious compared to snuggling up right next to it, like in this other flat that went for HK$2,900 a month.
