The Hong Kong government has decided to destroy the 28 tonnes of confiscated ivory it has in its possession, which is currently the world’s largest collection.
After four hours of discussion among members of the advisory committee responsible for the protection of rare animals, authorities decided to incinerate the elephant tusks it has confiscated since 2003, all within two years. These tusks are estimated to be worth HK$14 billion on the black market.
The committee hopes that this act will stop illegal elephant hunting and combat ivory smuggling activities in Hong Kong, but they think that taking two years to incinerate the ivory is too long.
