For the third consecutive year, Hong Kong has recorded a record number of new HIV infections. This year, a record number of 559 cases were recorded, indicating a 9 percent increase from 2012 which reported 513 cases. In 2011, there were 438 cases. The first diagnosed case of HIV in Hong Kong was in 1984.
The Center for Health Protection, Wong Ka-hing, claims that most of the infections were a results of sexual intercourse between men, and the Department of Health reported 80 percent of the 559 cases this year were men, with half of them catching the virus via homosexual sexual contact.
