HIV cases in first quarter of 2014 record high

A consultant at Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection claims record figures of HIV cases in Hong Kong “worrying”, according to the RTHK.

In just the first quarter of 2014, the Centre recorded 154 new HIV infected patients, a three-month high.

Last year Hong Kong reported, for the third consecutive year, a record number of 559 new HIV infections, up nine percent from 2012.

Homosexual contact is still the most common means of transmitting the infection in Hong Kong, with 55 percent of HIV cases being contracted via homosexual contact between men, according to the SCMP.

The first diagnosed case of HIV in Hong Kong was in 1984.
