Two trekkers fainted while hiking in Sai Kung on Thursday, one of whom died after arriving at hospital, HK01 reported.

The 60-year-old man, who passed away, was hiking with his four friends to Pak Lap beach in the southern end of Sai Kung. He felt unwell and lost consciousness at 12:13pm. His friends called for help and the man was airlifted to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. He was declared dead at 2:00pm.

The man is suspected to have had a heart attack.

In a separate incident just minutes after, a man hiking in Long Ke called for help after his friend fainted. He was taken to the same hospital via helicopter and regained consciousness on the way there.

Hong Kong recorded its hottest day of the year today, according to RTHK, with the temperature soaring to 33.9°C. 2019 was Hong Kong’s hottest year on record with a mean temperature of 24.5°C.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the “very hot weather warning” at 12:15pm. To prevent heatstroke, citizens are advised to stay indoors and avoid prolonged exposure under sunlight, the observatory says.

“The very hot weather warning” is forecast to continue for the next few days, and the maximum temperature on Friday is expected to hit 34 degrees in urban areas.

The heat spell comes after a weekend of stormy weather that saw heavy rain over three consecutive days. Last Saturday, the black rainstorm warning was raised for the first time in three years.
