After a large tree fell during a heavy rainstorm at the intersection of Bonham Road and Centre Street last month, the Highways Department felled four trees that grew next to it more than two weeks later, much to the chagrin of local residents.
In response, the government has published a report on the trees’ felling, stating that they had no choice but to “urgently remove” the trees on Aug. 7 “in the absence of any other feasible mitigation measures”.
On Aug. 5, the Highways Department found cracks on the wall from which the trees grew, and noticed that they were worsening.
Given that the trees were located on a busy road where many pedestrians and cars passed, the government decided to remove the trees for the sake of public safety.
The report is available online here.
