High-speed car chase in TST ends with police pointing guns at suspect

A high-speed, high-octane car chase took place in Tsim Sha Tsui over the weekend, which lead to police pulling out their guns to apprehend a suspect.

At around 4.30am on Sunday, Apple Daily reports that traffic police from Kowloon West Regional Headquarters noticed a black Mercedes-Benz veering erratically at the junction of Carnarvon Road and Granville Road, and signaled to the driver to pull over.

However, the driver refused to stop, and instead accelerated in an attempt to shake the police officers off.

As more police officers were called for backup, the police car chased the Benz through Granville Road, Salisbury Road, Austin Road, Parkes Street, and backwards through Jordan Road, where the car reportedly went into the opposite lane.

The chase apparently lasted over 10 minutes, spanned over 5 kilometres, and saw the Benz’s driver speed through six red lights in total.

At one point, the Benz collided side-on with the police car before getting cornered on Lin Cheung Road in Tai Kok Tsui. The motorist then reportedly jumped out of the car and attempted to make a run for it, but was eventually caught in a cargo handling area nearby, having apparently lost a shoe sometime in the shenanigans.

Who knows how? We like to think it got loosened from all that pedal to the metal action.

Police pulled out their guns before arresting the single-shoed driver, a 28-year-old man surnamed Leung, who was charged with dangerous driving and resisting arrest. The Mercedes-Benz’s registered owner is not Leung, but apparently a person surnamed Ho, who has since been contacted by the police to assist in their investigations.

No contraband was found on Leung or in the car, and both Leung and an injured police officer were taken to the hospital to be treated.

Police officers from Yau Tsim District Crime Squad are currently investigating the case.
