Many refugees live in the dirty and dangerous slums of Ng Ka Tsuen in the New Territories.
Refugees are generally forbidden from working in Hong Kong and have to rely on funds provided by the International Social Services (ISS).
Every month, ISS provides refugees with only HKD1,200 worth of food. ISS also provides HKD1,500 a month for rent, which is given directly to their landlords.
In Jan. 2015, a Sri Lankan refugee living in Ng Ka Tsuen died in a fire, leading to a government crackdown on the village. Despite their attempts to shut down the slum, refugees continue to live there.
In this video, Coconuts TV speaks to Mani, a Pakistani refugee living in Ng Ka Tsuen, and to Cosmo Beatson, the founder of local NGO Vision First.
