An Indonesian domestic worker has been hailed a hero after saving her 84-year-old female employer from a vicious hammer attack.
The events unfolded in Kau Wah Keng New Village, Lai Chi Kok, on Friday when a man surnamed Tong allegedly attacked a 48-year-old village representative with a box cutter in the village office.
Ming Pao (as translated by EJI) reports that Tong then ran back to his house, grabbed a hammer and went to call on his neighbours, 84-year-old Chan Yuk-mei and her 31-year-old maid Bitbit Pujiati.
Pujiati opened the door, and immediately grabbed Tong tightly from behind as he tried to storm into Chan’s room with the hammer, it is reported. The Indonesian woman’s selfless actions gave Chan time to run out of the house and call for help.
Tong, however, managed to escape Pujiati’s vice-like clutches, and ran back to the village office where he apparently tried to commit suicide by slashing himself. He was later arrested and sent to hospital for treatment.
After the shocking ordeal, Chan told Apple Daily that she would probably be dead if it wasn’t for her fearless maid, while her son thanked the helper for saving his mother’s life. The family says it will shower Pujiati with presents to show their gratitude.
The reasons for the attacks are still unknown, but it is reported that Tong complained of psychological problems after his arrest. He is due to appear in court on Nov, 20 charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm.
