Emergency services are searching for two men — a hiker and a surfer — who went missing on the weekend in two separate cases, according to reports.

The hiker, according to on.cc, disappeared Sunday on Po Toi Island after leaving his Ma On Shan house at 5.30am to hike the southeastern end of Hong Kong Island.

The Standard reported the man, Chan Tin-sung, 62, was reported missing by his family about 10.45pm that day. His friends have circulated his photo on a hiking Facebook group, urging members to help look for him.

Marine police from Aberdeen deployed vessels to search the area, while a Government Flying Service helicopter was also called.

Chan, who is 1.73 meters tall and weighs 74 kilograms, is described as having a roundish face with tan skin and short black hair. He was wearing a yellow short-sleeved top, a gray hat, dark glasses and a gray backpack.

His disappearance follows another incident on Po Toi, an island known as the ‘South Pole of Hong Kong’ which is composed almost entirely of weathered granite and accessible by ferry. On March 31, a woman hiking the island had to be rescued after falling into a valley, The Standard reported.

The news comes after the government announced last month that the number of hiking deaths had doubled to 15 in 2017 from 7 in 2016.

Meanwhile, emergency services are also searching for a 49-year-old man, also surnamed Chan, who disappeared about 3pm on Sunday after falling off his board while surfing in Silvermine Bay on Lantau.

Police received reports that a surf board was found floating about 40 meters from Mui Wo pier and sent officers to search for him, The Standard reported.

Anyone with information should call the Ma On Shan police district at 3661-2660.
