An unlicensed hawker who pushed an enforcement officer during a tussle in Central last year has pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Hong Kong’s High Court.
Rashid Khan, 37, was remanded in custody yesterday after the court heard that anti-hawker officer Wu Kwong-sun, 58, hit his head on a pavement when trying to grab hold of Khan on March 15, 2015.
The Pakistani-born Hong Kong resident was selling hats out of striped bags in On Lok Yuen building when the altercation occurred, the SCMP reports.
CCTV footage shows Khan pushing Wu outside the building as the officer tried to grab hold of him, causing the Wu to fall backwards, hit his head and fall unconscious.
Wu died in Queen Mary Hospital three days later, despite an emergency operation on his fractured skull.
Khan fled the scene at the time, but handed himself into the police two days later. He reportedly told them under caution that Wu was not pushed, but slipped, and that he had no idea the officer was unconscious when he ran away.
Khan’s counsel requested bail for the father-of-six on the grounds that his wife has just given birth to a new child, who Khan would like to spend some time with before an inevitable jail term. The judge, however, remanded him in custody until sentencing on Jan. 29.
He had not been detained until yesterday.
