A hawker accused of pushing a Hong Kong hygiene inspector down some steps, leaving him in a life threatening coma, has handed himself into police.
The 36-year-old man walked into Central Police Station yesterday after police announced they were looking for the suspect of Sunday’s attack.
Wu Kong-sum, 58, is fighting for his life in Queen Mary Hospital after undergoing brain surgery while remaining in a coma.
CCTV footage shows Wu struggling with a man selling baseball caps on Des Voeux Road Central at around 4:45pm on Sunday.
After he attempted to grab the arm of the hawker, Wu was seemingly knocked down some steps, sustaining serious head injuries.
The man had been prosecuted by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department on two previous occasions, the SCMP reports.
According to the department, staff on the hawker control team have sustained injuries while on duty 42 times in the last 12 months.
They usually work in pairs when making arrests, and it is not clear why Wu was on his own.
