The government has proposed to optimise the Supplementary Labour Scheme earlier but labour representatives in short-staffed industries — including nursing, F&B, and airplane maintenance — stated that the main reason for staff shortage is due to long hours, poor treatment, and the lack of a professional image.
Some employers have even resorted to using job recruitment ads to collect information from job candidates and submit such data to the labour department as proof of staff shortage and to apply for imported workers.
Labour representatives are requesting employers in these industries should raise salaries and improve benefits instead to attract newcomers and retain staff.
