Guilty: Former TVB boss Stephen Chan fined HK84,000 in bribery case

Steven Chan, a former TVB boss, was found guilty in a long-running bribery case at Hong Kong’s District Court on Friday and fined HKD84,000. Chan’s personal assistant Edthancy Tseng, 33, was also convicted of conspiracy to accept an advantage, and fined HKD28,000 for his part in the crime, the SCMP reports.

Chan, 55, the former host of the Be My Guest talk show, was originally charged with neglecting to report earnings of HKD112,000 – paid to him through a company owned by Tseng – for a 2009 New Year’s Eve appearance at Olympian City mall in Tai Kok Tsui.

Chan became TVB’s general manager back in 2004. At the height of his popularity, he was known to have invited guests such as Olympic gold medalist Lee Lai-shan and former chief executive Donald Tsang on his show.

During mitigation, Joseph Tse SC, Chan’s lawyer, said that people from all walks of life asked the court for leniency when sentencing the fallen celebrity.

Neither Chan nor Tseng will serve any jail time.
