An actor and a pro-democracy activist were arrested today in connection with the July 1 protest which saw protesters storm into the Legislative Council.

Gregory Wong and Ventus Lau were taken to police stations after officers visited their homes in early morning raids, according to those close to them.

Nathan Law  –  co-founder of political party Demosisto and one of the lawmakers who was unseated for improper oath-taking in 2017  –  posted on Facebook this morning that Wong was arrested at his apartment on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage and entering the LegCo chamber, in violation of the Legislative Council (Powers and Privileges) Ordinance.

Law wrote that Wong was taken to Wan Chai police station, and a legal support team had been sent to help him.

Another activist, Emilia Wong, also confirmed on Facebook that Lau was taken to Castle Peak police station at 6am this morning also on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage and entering the LegCo chamber.

Wong is a TV and film actor, and a vocal pro-democracy supporter. One of his most notable roles was in a 2014 TV show called The Election, a political drama that was aired at the height of the Umbrella Movement, was centered on the chief executive elections for 2017, and was referred to in local media as Hong Kong’s House of Cards

Lau, is a pro-democracy activist known for organizing a number of rallies, most notably the rally in Tsim Sha Tsui in July which was aimed at trying to raise awareness of the city’s protesters to mainlanders shopping in the area.

Wong and Lau are not the only high-profile activists arrested in recent months. Last month, five people –  including Joshua Wong and Agnes Chow –  were arrested for their involvement in the anti-government protests, which is now entering its 17th week.
