Green minibus rides only HK$2 for the elderly

From the first quarter of 2015 onwards, the elderly in Hong Kong can travel by green minibus for just HK$2, in addition to concessionary fares on buses, MTR and ferries.

The scheme is to promote active aging, encouraging the elderly and disabled to move around the city.

Unfortunately, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung King-chung does not think the elderly will be able to enjoy such fares on red minibuses as the fares and routes aren’t regulated by the government, so extending the scheme to such transportation would be difficult.

It’s not all bad news though, from Feb. 1 those aged 65 above with income and assets not exceeding set limits have been given a higher allowance of HK$2,285 per month. For those aged 70 and over, the allowance has increased to HK$1,180.
