Government urged to destroy 30 tonnes of ivory

The Hong Kong government is now considering destroying the 30 tonnes of ivory it has confiscated, following the lead of China which publically destroyed 6.2 tonnes of ivory a few days ago.

Celebrities concerned about elephant conservation and the director of the Environmental Education Fund has collected 10,000 signatures in a petition to urge the government to destroy the ivory, which will be sent to the Fisheries Department at the end of this month.

Part of the ivory is currently used for education purposes, and according to the director of the Environmental Fund, most of these ivory is carved into Guanyin figures. Watching 30 tonnes of ivory destroyed will be quite a sight, not to mention that it’d be symbolic of conservation efforts.
