Government health clinic administers wrong vaccine to infant

A two-month-old infant was given the wrong vaccine at the Kowloon City Maternal and Child Health Centre. Rather than the pneumococcal vaccine he was supposed to get, he got a jab of the Hepatitis B vaccine instead.

The mother said that after the nurse administered the vaccine, she looked confused and asked the mother if she remembered what vaccine the baby is supposed to get, and whether the needle was thick or thin, long or short. The clinic later discovered that the nurse administered the wrong vaccine.

After the vaccine, the baby had a high fever and refused to have his milk. Luckily, he is fine, but the mother is not. She said she has completely lost confidence in the government clinic system and won’t be going back.

We agree — that is a seriously dangerous blunder that shouldn’t be excused!
