Government criticised for approving ferry fare hikes

The Hong Kong Transport Department has approved a fare increase of five to six percent but the fare hike has been criticised by legislators.

Undersecretary for Transport, Yau Shing-mu told Legco today that the fare increases were approved after considering the running costs and level of subsidies, according to the RTHK.

However, legislators say that with the HK$190 million subsidies the ferry companies receive from the government, the fare hikes are only necessary because the government wants to ensure the companies are making healthy profits.
