Goodbye electric taxis?

Since BYD launched their electric taxis six months ago, with a heavily financed campaign that almost gives these taxis away for free, they are falling way short of their targeted launch of 45 cars this year.

Currently, only 26 taxi drivers are driving these electric taxis. Taxi drivers are reluctant to make the switch, complaining about the lack of charging facilities, long charge times, and the Airport Authority’s policy of forbidding electric taxis to queue for passengers and charge up at the same time.

BYD set the ambitious goal of 1,000 electric taxis by next year and 3,000 taxis the year after the next. Without some government help, it looks like this may be the end of the eye-catching electric taxi in Hong Kong.
