Good Excuse: Student activists threaten to boycott classes if universal suffrage demands aren’t met

Secondary school student pro-democracy group Scholarism has said that they are considering boycotting their classes if China doesn’t decide to allow the public nomination of candidates for the Chief Executive, reports the Wall Street Journal. Scholarism is behind the successful protests against the proposed incorporation of mandatory “patriotic” education in Hong Kong schools back in 2012.

“According to our plan, students wouldn’t attend the classes in school, but in the forum on civic education in a public area,” said Joshua Wong, the precocious 17-year-old leader of Scholarism, on Aug. 22. But they’re still “discussing the logistic issues” regarding where and how exactly they would hold such classes.

How we envy Wong’s youthful enthusiasm! We’re not sure how doing something detrimental to your own education would change mainland authorities’ minds, but their last protest worked so maybe we should follow in their footsteps and boycott our jobs. Do you think that would work?
