Police have arrested one man and are looking for two others following a robbery at a jewelry store in Central where the thieves made off with HK$40 million (nearly US$5.1 million) in precious items.
Speaking to reporters outside the Treasure Jewellery store on the ground floor of Duke Wellington House on Wellington Street this afternoon, chief inspector of police for the regional crime unit of Hong Kong Island Sin Kwok-ming confirmed that one man — believed to be a tourist from Colombia — was arrested near the scene and that most of the stolen items were recovered there.
The police are now looking for two other suspects who fled via Wai Tak Lane towards the nightlife district of Lan Kwai Fong.
At around 11am this morning, the trio reportedly used hammers to smash the display windows before snatching the jewelry and fleeing. Sin confirmed that the smash and grab took less than a minute.
Police have taken two hammers, clothes and gloves that are believed to have been left by the robbers as they fled.
Sin says the two suspects they are looking for were aged between 30 to 40, one was wearing a light-coloured top and the other a dark-colored top. Both were wearing dark-colored trousers.
