Gold Run: Hong Kong Consulate warns Filipinos against ‘gold mule’ recruitment

Hong Kong’s Philippines Consulate General has warned its nationals against being persuaded to act as “gold mules” after arrests were made at a Mumbai airport last month. Issuing a statement on its Facebook page on Monday, the authority claimed, “There are quite a number of Filipino nationals who have been victimized by the Indian syndicates” looking the bring gold into the country without paying duty tax.

The so-called “gold mules” are apparently being recruited in Hong Kong and Bangkok to smuggle gold bars on (and inside) their person in attempts to evade government authorities. The consulate has called the recent arrests “quiet alarming” (don’t go overboard guys), and urged any Filipinos approached to contact them on (+852) 9155-4023 or email: hongkongpc@philcongen-hk.com.
