A 7-year-old schoolgirl who choked on jelly during recess last week died at the hospital Wednesday.

According to HK01, the principal of Chiu Sheung School, Chim Hon-ming, said the girl was eating a piece of jelly while chatting with her friends last Wednesday when she choked. She fainted and began foaming at the mouth.

While waiting for an ambulance to arrive at the Pok Fu Lam school, teachers performed chest compressions on the girl according to instructions from a paramedic on the phone. After she vomited the jelly, teachers cleaned her up and continued their attempts to resuscitate her.

The girl was sent to Queen Mary Hospital. The school notified her parents, who also rushed to the hospital shortly after. The 7-year-old regained consciousness, but remained in critical condition until she died at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday.

Chim said the girl is not known to have any food allergies, and that it is possible that she ate too quickly, causing her to choke.

The school is offering counselling to grieving students and teachers, Chim said.
