A teenage girl was sent to intensive care when she collapsed shortly after a swimming race at Kowloon Park pool on Sunday.
Cheuk Long-yee, 14, from Kiangsu-Chekiang College Shatin, collapsed and fell to the ground after completing a 50m freestyle open competition organised by the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association.
She was representing the Win Tiin Swimming Club in the Age Group Long Course Swimming Competition, and registered for 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 200m breaststroke races.
Cheuk was seen struggling to breathe and had a weak pulse after the competition, at which point her coach sought help.
Lifeguards used a defibrillator to revive the student, who was then taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a critical condition.
The girl was said to be fit and a regular competitive swimmer for her school and club. No underlying illnesses have ever been mentioned.
Pasu Chung from the Win Tin Swimming club told the SCMP, “She has been training with us for a long time and she was also in good health. All the swimmers were fit enough to compete.”
The Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association is yet to comment on the incident.
