We admire this lady’s spirit for laughing off her tycoon father’s offer of HK$1 billion to the man who can win her heart, but to be honest, if we were Cecil Chao we’d find her letter, which pleads with her father to accept her sexuality, a hard pill to swallow.
Published exclusively in the SCMP yesterday (since when did SCMP become a tabloid?), Gigi Chao begins the letter by praising Cecil Chao’s business acumen, then goes on to apologise for misleading him in the past by dating men.
But when it comes to explain her attraction to women, she wrote: “I can’t really explain it either…it just happens,” and said that she loved her long-time partner Sean because “[she] ensures I am fed, bathed and warm enough…and cheering me up to be…happy, jolly…” – hmm, so Gigi falls in love with someone because she reminds her to bathe and eat?
Not all of it is baffling however, and we cheer for Gigi when she declares: “I am proud of my life, and I would not choose to live it any other way.”
