In the early hours of yesterday morning, a 23-year-old German man was filmed stealing a HKD700,000 camera that was set up on the side of Bowrington Road in Wan Chai.
Along with 10 others, the high-definition video camera was placed along the route of this year’s MTR Race Walking event, which occurred yesterday morning, reports Apple Daily. Engineers were testing them at around 2am when a worker noticed that one of the cameras had lost its signal.

Using a nearby camera to inspect the situation, the worker discovered a blond man fiddling with the camera for about five minutes before hauling the whole thing away.
The footage, of course, showed the entirety of the theft in full high-definition, as one one would expect from a HKD700,000 camera.

The film, showing the German spending five minutes inspecting the camera and another five dismantling it, was broadcast on local news reports the next morning.
The man, seeing himself getting caught red-handed on the telly, apparently emailed CTC Productions, the company charged with the event’s live coverage, claiming he was drunk and very kindly offering to return the expensive piece of kit.
The police received a report yesterday afternoon but arrested the man anyway, recovering the stolen property.
The man reportedly arrived in Hong Kong less than a month ago, and works at a trading company.
