Former TVB boss and assistant found guilty of bribery following payment from talk show venue

The former general manager of TVB and his assistant have both been found guilty of conspiring to accept advantages after previously being cleared of three charges of bribery.

Stephen Chan, 55, and Edthancy Tseng, 33, were bailed for HKD100,000 each yesterday and ordered to appear at Hong Kong’s District Court on Nov. 13.

The decision by the Court of Appeal vice-president Justice Wally Yeung marks the Department of Justice’s third attempt to appeal non-guilty verdicts handed down by lower courts.

The remaining bribery charge relates to an episode of Chan’s talk show “Be My Guest”, which was broadcast from the Olympian City shopping centre in Tai Kok Tsui on New Year’s Eve in 2009. Chan was found to have received HKD112,000 from the mall through a company run by his assistant Tseng.

Chan’s barrister said his client, who now works on Commercial Radio, made no attempt to hide the payment and was allowed to take contracts outside of TVB.

According to the SCMP, Chan smiled when the verdict was read out.
