A 59-year-old fisherman died on Thursday after he was struck by lightning at 6:35am while pulling his fishing nets onto his sampan in Rocky Harbour, Sai Kung. His 53-year-old wife, who was also on the boat at the time, witnessed the strike.
She flagged down a passing police boat, which brought the couple to a Sai Kung marine police base, reports the SCMP. The man was already unconscious at the time, abd declared dead at Tseung Kwan O hospital at 8:30am.
In the hour starting from 6am that morning, 377 lightning strikes were recorded to have hit the ground in New Territories East. A thunderstorm warning was in force at the time of the incident.
