First Hong Kong victim to die of bird flu

An 80-year-old man yesterday died of bird flu after he was infected with the H7N9 strain.

After displaying flu symptoms and discovered to have bird flu, he was promptly isolated at the Princess Margaret Hospital, where he died yesterday.

The man, who lives in Shenzhen, was suspected to have eaten chickens from the Shenzhen wet markets where the virus was found. He had a pre-existing heart condition and diabetes, and was more likely to fall prey to complications from bird flu.
