First Hong Kong fatality of Nepal quake confirmed

The first Hong Kong fatality of the Nepal earthquake has been confirmed.

The 42-year-old male victim was a Hong Kong resident living and working in the city with his family, but of Nepali origin.

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said it has offered the man’s family assistance in what is the first confirmed death of a Hong Kong resident in the disaster.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushi Koirala says the current death toll of more than 4,600 could rise to 10,000, making it the most deadly disaster in the country’s history.

Eight Hongkongers are still missing, while 33 have been confirmed safe. Around a dozen arrived home yesterday morning.
