A third-level alarm fire broke out at a North Point apartment block yesterday, injuring 25 people with seven in critical condition.
The 50-year-old Continental Mansion is known for its guesthouse establishments and many of the injured were foreign tourists from Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries. Dozens of people were wheeled out amidst the smoke and blaze in an unconscious state and faces blackened with soot.
The blaze started when construction debris in an alley behind the building caught fire and spread up the bamboo scaffolding surrounding the building; authorities suspect that a construction worker left the debris there on Sunday but it is unclear how the fire started.
The scaffolding was originally scheduled to be removed on Friday.
